Significant Milestones in the Chamber's History
1954- The Filipino Chamber of Commerce is established; the Philippine government's coat of arms with
the initials FCC is adopted as the Chamber's logo
1961- The Chamber is incorporated
1962 - The Chamber sponsors its first community event--the Bayanihan Philippine Dance Company tour
1962- The Chamber sponsors a trade mission to Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles
1963- The Chamber calls for the formation of a National Association of Filipino Community Councils of
america to better solve the problems of the Filipino community on a national level
1963- The Chamber establishes a scholarship fund
1963- Pres. Barney Menor leads the first Trade Mission to the Philippines
1964- The Chamber celebrates "Decade of Progress" with 88 members
1970- The Chamber endorses recommendation of Governor's Conference on Immigration to establish a
Service Center for Immigrants
1974 - The Chamber presents "Pasko Sa Pilipinas-Christmas Yuletide" at McKinley High School
1975- Governor George Ariyoshi leads the 2nd Trade Mission to the Philippines
1977- Governor Ariyoshi leads the 3rd Trade Mission to the Philippines
1977- Membership in the Chamber is open to non-Filipinos
1979- Congressman Cec Heftel leads the 4th Trade Mission to the Philippines
1981- The Chamber publishes a quarterly newsletter
1982- The Chamber questions DOE Superintendent Thompson's failure to hire Filipinos
1983- The first female--IsabelTagala-- is elected as president
1984- Governor Ariyoshi leads the 6th Trade Mission to the Philippines
1985- The Chamber plants a tree (#52 out of 100 trees planted) at Punchbowl National Cemetery
of the Pacific, together with Prince and Princess Hitachi of Japan
1986- The Chamber changes its name to Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii
1986- The By-laws are amended to elect a President for a one-year term and a President-elect
1987- The Chamber conducts "Training the Teacher" seminars with the Educational Testing Service
1989- The annual Filipino Entrepreneur of the Year Awards is launched
1991- The annual trade mission to the Philippines is reinstated after a seven year hiatus
1991- The Chamber begins its seminar/workshop programs
1992- The Chamber reinstates its Scholarship Awards program
1992- The Filipino Community Center begins under the leadership of the Chamber
1993- The first incoming Trade Mission from the Philippines organized by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce
& Industry and the Cebu Chamber
1994- The Chamber hosts its first Legislative Breakfast
1994- The Chamber receives a $25,000 grant from Bank of America to conduct Affordable Housing seminars
1994- The first joint meetings of the Philippine-Hawaii Business Council (spearheaded by the Philippine
Chamber) and the Hawaii- Philippine Business Council (spearheaded by the Chamber in cooperation
with the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii and the State of Hawaii) are held in Manila
1994- The Maui Chapter is established
1995- The first Scholarship Golf Tournament
1995- The Big Island Chapter is established
1995- Mayor Jeremy Harris leads the 12th Trade Mission to the Philippines
1996- The Chamber modernizes its Mission Statement
1997- The Chamber receives a $20,000 grant from American Savings Bank and a $15,000 contribution
from Equitable to conduct a Women Entrepreneur symposium
1998- The Chamber receives a $20,000 grant from the City and County of Honolulu (through Child & Family
Service) to conduct Micro-Enterprise workshops 1998- The Chamber hosts Philippine Vice President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo 1999- The Chamber establishes an affiliate relationship with the Honolulu Filipino Junior Chamber of Commerce 1999- The Chamber launches the Young Filipino Entrepreneur of the Year awards 1999- The Chamber adopts a new modern logo 1999- The Chamber hosts the Bicol Investment Mission delegates co-sponsored by the Philippine Department
of Tourism 1999- Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono leads the 16th Trade Mission to the Philippines 2000- The Chamber hosts a Trade Mission delegation from Cagayan de Oro and establishes a Sister Chamber
relationship with the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce
2003- The Chamber leads a statewide summit of Filipino Chambers of Maui, Big Island, Kona, and the Honolulu
Filipino Junior Chamber of Commerce 2004- The Chamber becomes a member of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations in America
(NaFFAA), Region 12 2004. Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo presents the Chamber with the
Lingkod sa Kapwa Pilipino Award for exceptional contributions to progress and development in the
Philippines
2006- The new Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii Foundation, a 501 (C)(3) non-profit organization is
established and received exemption from the Internal Revenue Service
2006- The Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii serves as the lead organization in hosting the Philippine
International Trade Expo in Honolulu, a project of the Filipino Centennial Celebrations Commission
2006- Legislative Breakfast is reinstated
2007- The Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii Foundation receives $8,000 grant from Von Hamm Fund
through the Hawaii Community Foundation for the Entrepreneurship Academy
2007- The first annual "A Taste of Kalihi" is held to help revitalize the Kalihi Business District in cooperation
with the City & County of Honolulu
2008- 501(c) (6) granted to make the chamber exempt from income taxes from federal and state.
2008- Filipino Chamber office moved from Downtown to 1125 N. King St. #302 in Kalihi to establish higher
visibility and convenience for the Filipino Chamber members
2008- First joint collaberation established with the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce
partnered up to conduct a joint Wrap-up Legislation session.
2008- Purchased accounting software and centralized our system to keep vital information safe and
for better record tracking
